Planes, tranes & automobiles

Congratulations to me! I have just purchased my plane ticket from Glasgow to London.

Why is it that the train, which takes five hours, costs £90, whereas the plane, which takes just over an hour, costs £34? The bus is only £6, but it takes more than nine hours!

  • The short answer is "because". A longer answer might be "because raiwlay comapnies believe they have an effective monopoly on long-distance routes". A more far-sighted answer would be "because the rail system has a lot of infrastrucure to pay for but the laissez-faire world of cheap air flights has yet to face up to its real environmental costs, and as long as a handful of business class will pay a premium price then you might as well have a full plane as not". (you did ask!)
